Scholarships or student grants program description

Project Info: PhD project to be jointly supervised by Dr Claire Eyers and Professor Simon Gaskell in the Michael Barber Centre for Mass Spectrometry.
The project will use mass spectrometric-based techniques to identify proteins post-translationally modified by ubiquitin. The overall aim of the project will be to assess the realtionship between sites of protein ubiquitination and rate of protein turnover in cells.
The student will receive a broad training in the major developing areas of proteomics analysis of post-translational modifications. Specific training will be given in MS and associated bioinformatics tools, as well as basic protein biochemistry and cell biology.
Qualifications: Applicants should have or expect a good (I or II(i)) honours degree (or an equivalent degree) in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related science.
In addition, candidates should have interest (experience)in analytical chemistry and/or protein biochemistry.
Funding: Standard EPSRC funding rate for 42 months. The studentship will cover tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend of £13,290 for 2009/10. Eligibility restricted to UK/EU applicants with 3 years residency in the UK.
