The Scholarship was established in honour of Professor Annemarie Schimmel to commemorate her role as a dedicated female scholar and her great contribution to art and culture in Pakistan. It provides the opportunity for graduate study in the United Kingdom to female students from Pakistan, who are committed to making a genuine contribution to their chosen field on their return to Pakistan.

The Schimmel Scholarship is awarded to female scholars, for study at recognised institutions of higher education in the UK for up to two academic years.
* The Schimmel scholarship is awareded for ability and commitment, without discriminating against religion, caste or creed.
* Candidates must be a citizen of Pakistan with an intention to return and pursue a career in Pakistan.
* Previous work experience in the chosen field is beneficial.
* There is no restriction on age, but preference will be given to candidates between the ages of 25 and 40.
* The scholarship seeks to aid students specifically requiring financial assistance and who may otherwise be unable to study. Candidates must therefore provide evidence of their need for financial assistance. Candidates must bear the expenses of air travel.
* Preference will be given to candidates who have secured admission to a programme of study at a recognised institution of their choice within the United Kingdom. However, this is not a requirement.
