International Summer School in Environmental Journalism and Communication (ISSEJC)

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications,

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Greece

and

the School of Communications,

Dublin City University – Ireland

in cooperation with

the European Journalism Centre

and

the Regional Press Institute – Greece

are launching the ISSEJC an intensive training programme for advanced students and young professionals.

Where:
Greece – Crete island – Chania city – Regional Press Institute premises and facilities

When:
21 – 30 July 2014 (10 days)

(100 hours in total; from 10.00 to 14.00 daily lectures plus workshops, field visits and activities and project work – ECTS 4)

Why: What happens when the Environment meets Journalism and Communication? It is time to take a closer look at them.

The ISSEJC aims to advance the public awareness and understanding of environmental issues and policies by enhancing the quality, range, depth and validity of their communication and journalistic coverage. Bringing together a wide range of stakeholders – scholars, students, professionals, policy-makers and environmental scientists – it seeks to improve the knowledge, abilities and skills of both professional and emerging journalists to report on environmental issues based on the methodical understanding of the connections between media, economy, culture and environment, as well as between local, peripheral and global contexts. Special emphasis is given to media’s role in shaping social values and attitudes in relation to the environment, as well as to its critical contribution in advancing civic awareness and engagement with the issue of sustainable development.

Who should attend?

The ISSEJC welcomes applications from junior scholars, researchers, professionals, practitioners and graduate students from all over the world. Applicants will be expected to either pursue or hold a graduate qualification in a relevant subject or to have appropriate professional experience, and should be proficient in English.

The total number of participants will not exceed 26 persons and will be not less than 22.

What is the course fee?


The ISSEJC course fee is 980 euros and it includes:

- Half-Board Accommodation in the premises of the Regional Press Institute (stay in double room with private bath, between the start and end date of the programme & breakfast and lunch & four dinners with Mediterranean and traditional Cretan cuisine and refreshments-drinks from local producers).

- Coffee breaks according to the programme.

- Transport in Crete according to the educational programme activities (scheduled field visits, educational tours, and leisure tours: daily transport to the beach for a swim after the end of the educational programme day).

- Educational trips.

- Course educational material.

Important details

The working language of the ISSEJC is English and there will be no translation.

Upon completion of the ISSEJC the participants receive Certificate of Attendance and Participation.
