Austerity and Recovery: The Sovereign Debt-Financial Sector Nexus
Riga, Latvia

Scholarship / Financial aid: travel (economy class round-trip) and accommodation will be partially covered for speakers

Date: 2-3 June 2014

Deadline: 1 February 2014

Open to: international PhD students

Announcement follows

After years of essentially passive fiscal policy, both fiscal and monetary policies have become more activist. Fiscal dominance, once a problem in emerging market economies, has reappeared in advanced economies. Moreover, sovereign debt no longer offers the financial sector balance sheet protection against the risk of default. Hence, a premium exists on stress-testing the banking system. We are primarily interested in applied papers that explore the macro and micro-prudential challenges faced by fiscal policy in an era of substantial debt, an ageing population, historically low interest rates, and a financial system exposed to new stresses and regulatory constraints.

Topics to be considered for the workshop include, but are not limited, to:

- links between fiscal and monetary policies;

- behavior of risk premia on government bonds;

- contagion and herding between returns on government bonds and across asset types in normal and crisis times;

- role of the exchange rate system in the crisis and recovery process;

- methodology of stress-testing;

- determinants of success or failure of austerity programs.

We especially welcome empirical papers, but we will also consider theoretical work. Space will be devoted to presentations by PhD students. Papers accepted for publication will not be considered.

The workshop will take place on 2-3 June 2014 in Riga, Latvia.

EXPENSES: Expenses for travel (economy class round-trip) and accommodation will be partially covered for speakers.

Only complete research papers (PDF versions only) should be sent by 1 February 2014 to: Martin Bohl, Email:

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 28 February 2014. Authors should confirm their participation by 15 March 2014.

More detailed information on the workshop will be available soon at and
