CFP: Conference | Highly Skilled Migration in the 21st Century
Middlesex University, Hendon Campus, London, UK

Scholarship / Financial aid: none

Date: 24-25 May 2012

Deadline: 12th December 2011

Open to: international researchers

Announcement follows

Research in the field of migration has tended to focus on the multifarious international diasporas of the poor and the powerless. Taking important new research in the field of intra-European highly-skilled migration as its launching point - French Capital: A Study of French Highly Skilled Migrants in London’s Financial and Business Sectors (Mulholland and Ryan) - this conference will provide a forum for international researchers to share, review and debate new empirical and theoretical developments in the field of international and intra-European highly-skilled migration. In particular, it will concern itself with exploring the interplay between the economic, socio-cultural, spatial and life-cycle dynamics shaping this under-researched field of human mobility.

The conference will address the following aims:

• To showcase the latest empirical research in the field of international and intra-European highly-skilled migration
• To apply and evaluate established and new theoretical and conceptual developments in the light of this empirical research
• To provide a forum for social scientific debate, networking, collaboration and the formulation of new directions for research

Confirmed Plenary speakers are:
Prof Louise Ackers ,
Prof Jonathan Beaverstock,
Prof Adrian Favell,
Prof Eleonore Kofman.

Abstracts are invited to contribute to one of the following themes:

1. Theorising and conceptualising highly skilled migration
2. The demographics and mapping of highly skilled mobility
3. Intra-European highly skilled migration – policies, philosophies, integrations and identities
4. Identity, belonging, and the highly skilled migrant- trans-nationalism and cosmopolitanism
5. The global city and the highly skilled migrant - space, residence and community
6. Economy, business, work and careers in the context of highly skilled migration
7. Diversity in highly skilled migration – gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, disability
8. The family and highly skilled migration

The conference is organised by Dr. Jon Mulholland and Dr. Louise Ryan, with Clare Choak, Middlesex University

Abstracts of no more than 250 words must be submitted to Jon Mulholland (j.mulholland@mdx.ac.uk ) by 12th December 2011 at the latest.
