Announcement follows

To mark the 30th anniversary of the CEDAW, adopted on 18 December 1979, the UN Regional Coordinating Mechanism’s Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (RCM TWG GEEW) is hosting a Photo Contest on the theme “WOMEN CAN – Women’s Rights are Human Rights”.


The 7 contest winners will receive official plaques of recognition and their winning photographs will be unveiled on 25 November 2009 at the opening of the exhibition “Women CAN: Women’s Rights are Human Rights” held in Bangkok, Thailand. The winning photographs will also be featured on the websites of the UN agencies involved in organizing the contest.


SUBMISSION CRITERIA
Successful entries will depict gender equality and non-discrimination of women in action in the Asia-Pacific region on the theme: Women can – Women’s Rights are Human Rights.


Interpretations of this theme can include depictions of:

- Women participating in decision-making processes, such as women exercising their right to vote and the right to be elected, taking part in peace negotiations and post-conflict reconstruction processes, holding leadership positions in the government, civil society, community, private sector;
- Women participating in post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction initiatives;
- Women and girls enjoying the same opportunities for education as men and boys;
- Women enjoying the same employment opportunities and labour rights as men, and working in sectors that are traditionally dominated by men;
- Women having equal access to health care services;
- Women and men participating equally in household duties, such as taking care of children or the elderly;
- Rural women, indigenous women, HIV positive women, migrant women, refugee women and other often excluded groups of women enjoying these rights.


CONDITIONS
- Each individual/organisation can submit more than one entry;
- Photographs must not have been featured or printed in previous publications, promotional materials or websites;
- Entries must be submitted with the permission of the photographer;
- The photographer retains copyright; any photograph used by the organisers will bear the photographer’s name and country;
- By submitting an entry, the contestant agrees to the condition that any image submitted for the contest may be used by the organisers for not-for-profit advocacy and promotional materials, including but not limited to: photo exhibition related to this contest, publications, websites, documents, presentations, videos and PSAs;
- Photographers must be citizens or residents of a country in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Winners are invited to the exhibition opening but cannot be financially supported by the organisers;
- Due to the large volume of expected submissions, only winners will be contacted.
